Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She has worked as a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos which include commentary on gender representations in the media and popular culture of today. As well as working to bring awareness to the targeted and sexist assaults on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is committed to breaking the stereotypes in the popular culture. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Since her early years she was intrigued by the issue of gender identity and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. It was a girl determined to make an online series which would explore gender roles in video games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist media critic. Sarkeesian has been awarded several awards for her contributions to feministism.
